Is nuclear power regaining energy?

A decade ago, it seemed as though the global nuclear industry was in an irreversible decline.

Concerns over safety, cost, and what to do with radioactive waste had sapped enthusiasm for a technology once seen as a revolutionary source of abundant cheap energy.

Yet now there is widespread talk of a revival, fuelled by tech giants Microsoft, Google and Amazon all announcing investments in the sector, as well as the growing pressures on wealthy nations to curb their carbon emissions.

But how real is the comeback?

When commercial nuclear power was first developed in the 1950s and 1960s, governments were seduced by its seemingly unlimited potential.

Nuclear reactors could harness and control the same awesome forces released by atomic bombs – to provide electricity for millions of homes. With a single kilogram of uranium yielding some 20,000 times as much energy as a kilogram of coal, it seemed like the future.

But the technology also inspired public fear. And that fear seemed to be justified by the Chernobyl disaster, which spread radioactive contamination across Europe in early 1986.

It fuelled widespread public and political opposition – and slowed the growth of the industry.

Another accident, at the Fukushima Daichi plant in Japan in 2011, re-energised concerns about nuclear safety. Japan itself shut down all of its reactors in the immediate aftermath, and only 12 have since restarted.

Germany decided to phase out nuclear power altogether. Other countries scaled back plans to invest in new power plants, or extend the lives of ageing facilities.

According to the International Atomic Energy Agency, this led to the loss of 48GW of electric power generation globally between 2011 and 2020.

But nuclear development did not stop. In China, for example, there were 13 nuclear reactors in 2011. There are now 55, with another 23 under construction.

For Beijing, scrambling to meet rapidly growing electricity demand, nuclear had, and still has, a vital role to play.

Now interest in the sector seems to be growing elsewhere once again. This is partly because developed countries are hunting for ways to meet energy demand, while striving to meet emissions reduction targets under the Paris Agreement.

With 2024 projected to be the warmest year on record, the pressure to cut carbon emissions is mounting. A renewed focus on energy security, in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, has also been a factor.

South Korea, for example, recently scrapped plans to phase out its large fleet of nuclear power stations over the next four decades – and will build more instead.

And France has reversed plans to reduce its own reliance on nuclear energy, which provides 70% of its electricity. Instead, it wants to build up to eight new reactors.

In addition, last week the US government reaffirmed at the United Nations Climate Change Conference, or Cop29, held in Azerbaijan, that it intends to triple nuclear power generation by 2050.

The White House had originally pledged to do this on the side lines of last year’s conference, Cop28. A total of 31 countries have now agreed to try to triple their use of nuclear power by 2050, including the UK, France and Japan.

Also at Cop29, which ends on Friday, 22 November, the US and UK announced that they would collaborate to speed up the development of new nuclear power technology.

This follows after it was agreed in the final statement or “stocktake” of last year’s Cop28 that nuclear should be one of the zero or low emission technologies to be “accelerated” to help combat climate change.

But hunger for clean power is not just coming from governments. Technology giants are striving to develop more and more applications that use artificial intelligence.

Yet AI relies on data – and data centres need constant, reliable electricity. According to Barclays Research, data centres account for 3.5% of electricity consumption in the US today, but that figure could rise to more than 9% by the end of the decade.

In September, Microsoft signed a 20-year deal to buy power from Constellation Energy, which will lead to the reopening of the infamous Three Mile Island power station in Pennsylvania – the site of the worst nuclear accident in US history, where a reactor suffered a partial meltdown in 1979.

Despite its tainted public image, another reactor at the plant continued to generate electricity until 2019. Constellation’s chief executive Joe Dominguez described the deal to reopen it as a “powerful symbol of the rebirth of nuclear power as a clean and reliable energy resource”.

Other tech giants have taken a different approach. Google plans to buy energy produced from a handful of so-called Small Modular Reactors or SMRs – a nascent technology intended to make nuclear energy easier and cheaper to deploy. Amazon is also supporting SMR development and construction.

SMRs themselves are being promoted, in part, as a solution to one of the biggest drawbacks facing nuclear power today. In western nations, new power stations have to be built to exacting modern safety standards. This makes them prohibitively expensive and complicated to build.

Hinkley Point C is a good example. Britain’s first new nuclear power station since the mid-1990s is being built on a stretch of remote coastline in southwest England.

It is meant to be the first of a batch of new plants to replace the country’s ageing reactor fleet. But the project is running some five years behind schedule and will cost up to £9bn ($11.5bn) more than planned.

It is not an isolated case. The US’s newest reactors at Plant Vogtle in Georgia opened seven years late, and cost more than $35bn – well over double their original budget.

SMRs are designed to solve this problem. They will be smaller than traditional reactors, using standardised parts that can be assembled quickly, at sites close to where the power is needed.

But while there are some 80 different designs under development globally, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency, the concept has yet to be proven commercially.

Opinions about nuclear power remain highly polarised. Supporters claim the technology is indispensable if climate targets are to be reached. Among them is Rod Adams, whose Nucleation Capital fund promotes investment in nuclear technology.

“Nuclear fission has a seven-decade history showing it is one of the safest power sources available,” he explains.

“It is a durable, reliable source of power with low ongoing costs already, but capital costs have been too high in Western countries.”

Opponents though, insist nuclear power is not the answer.

According to Professor M.V. Ramana of the University of British Columbia, it is “a folly to consider nuclear energy as clean”. It is, he says, “one of the most expensive ways to generate electricity. Investing in cheaper low-carbon sources of energy will provide more emissions reductions per dollar.”

If current trends do herald a new nuclear age, one old problem remains. After 70 years of atomic power, there is still disagreement over what to do with the accumulated radioactive waste – some of which will remain hazardous for hundreds of thousands of years.

The answer being pursued by many governments is geological disposal – burying the waste in sealed tunnels deep underground. But only one country, Finland, has actually built such a facility, while environmentalists and anti-nuclear campaigners argue that dumping waste out of sight and out of mind is simply too risky.

Solving that conundrum may be a key factor in dictating whether there really will be a new age of nuclear power.

The Cityzens continued their European dominance at the Joie Stadium last week, defeating Hammarby 2-0 thanks to goals from Laura Blindkilde Brown and Aoba Fujino. The English side travel to Stockholm with three wins out of three so far, currently sitting at the top of their group standings.

Tournament newcomers Hammarby have had a turbulent start to their European campaign, clinching a 2-0 victory over St. Polten on matchday one before falling to consecutive defeats against Barcelona and Man City. The Bajen faithful will play a big part in the home leg, after their incredible travelling support filled the Joie Stadium with noise last week.

Having been drawn in what many may consider to be the toughest group in the Champions League, it would probably take a miracle for this young side to out-qualify City or Barcelona. Despite the fact that the odds are stacked against them, we are certainly going to witness a brave and hearty performance from the Swedish side.

Hammarby concluded their 2024 league season last weekend, wrapping up the Damallsvenskan campaign in third place behind Rosengard and BK Hacken.

This means Hammarby can train their focus on the Champions League fixture, also being treated to the luxury of a week off in between the double-header with Man City. This will provide Martin Sjogren with valuable time to reassess last week’s performance against the Cityzens, and best prepare his side for the challenge.

Martin Sjogren made a brave choice with his lineup at the Joie Stadium, choosing to remain headstrong about his attacking philosophy. It won’t look much different on Thursday, as Hammarby must remain brave in order to have any hopes at taking down one of the group’s giants.

Vilde Hasund and Cathinka Tandberg still remain Hammarby’s only two goalscorers in the Champions League so far. Julie Blakstad will face her old club again.

Gareth Taylor made only minor changes to his City side to face Hammarby last week, with young star Laura Blindkilde Brown earning her spot in the starting lineup after opening the scoring.

Changes are expected to be made for the away leg, as City return from a 2-1 defeat against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, marking their first WSL loss during the 2024/25 campaign.

The team remain without Vivianne Miedema and they have been dealt a further blow this week, after it was revealed Lauren Hemp underwent knee surgery and no update had been given on her return.

Defensive duo Laia Aleixandri and Naomi Layzell may be in the running to return on Thursday.

Man City predicted lineup against Hammarby ( 4-3-3 ): Keating; Casparij, Aleixandri, Greenwood, Ouahabi; Hasegawa, Park, Blindkilde Brown; Kelly, Shaw, Fujino.

Hammarby will be eager to put on a brave display in front of the Bajen faithful in order to keep their European hopes alive. This may be to their own detriment, as City will search to exploit their press and get on the scoresheet early on.

The Swedish side had some bright moments against Man City in the away leg, and may well capitalise on those signs in order to nullify City in Stockholm. Though with the international break arriving after the fixture, the Cityzens will likely throw everything into the game in order to solidify their spot at the top of Group D.

It’s likely that City will run away with victory on the occasion, certainly hoping to maintain the distance between themselves and Barcelona ahead of their December meeting.

Queen’s Piper Plays Bagpipes At Funeral

The moving moments were especially symbolic given the Queen started most days with the sound of bagpipes.

As something of an alarm clock, the piper would play at 9 a.m. for 15 minutes for the monarch wherever she was in residence.

Pipe Major Scott Methven, who held the role between 2015 and 2019, told the BBC last week that he got to know the Queen very well during his time in the position.

“It was a pleasure as her Majesty would stand and watch you play,” he told the BBC. “She enjoyed the bagpipes, but she got to know you as a person.”

Liverpool and Mo Salah: Is the era coming to an end?

It would certainly be an end of an era if Mohamed Salah leaves Liverpool at the end of the season. The way things appear to be going at the moment, that appears a likely outcome.

There have never been any doubts about the Egyptian winger wanting to remain at Anfield for the rest of his playing days, and he himself said as much on more that one occasion. The club also want him to stay. However, no reports of a breakthrough in the talks between the club and Ramy Abbas have come, only claims that the two sides are far apart in the negotiations. Many among the supporters have been bandying about the phrase “just give him what he wants”, but it’s obviously not that simple.

At this point, it’s worth pointing out that nobody, apart from the people involved in the negotiations, knows what Salah and Abbas demand, or what Liverpool have offered so far. The gap might be in the amount of the wages, the bonuses, or perhaps the length of contract.

Another factor that may well be influencing Liverpool’s position is the fact that they’ve parted ways with some of the most important players of the Jurgen Klopp era, such as Georginio Wijnaldum, Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, and most recently, Joel Matip. Being 37 at the time of his departure to Brighton and Hove Albion, James Milner was obviously a different case.

The performances of most of these players after their transfers away from Liverpool indicate that the club had made their choicees wisely, albeit a bit ruthlessly, too. However, at the age of 32, Salah doesn’t seem to be slowing down; on the contrary. The little bit of pace he appears to have lost doesn’t pose a problem – he’s developed his game in another direction, and his numbers, 67 minutes between goal contributions this season, are even more impressive than in his first season at Anfield when he scored or assisted every 71 minutes on average.

So the first question Liverpool will want to work out an answer to is, for how long can Salah keep going like this? His form and importance in the team are certain to drop at some point in the future, but how far off is that moment?

Some have pointed out that whatever earnings Salah craves, it would probably be cheaper to pay them than to sign a suitable replacement, providing one even exists. The club would likely have to pay a large transfer fee to sign a new player, and that new player would likely demand lucrative financial terms as well.

There is, however, another side to this same argument. A replacement for Salah will certainly be needed at some point in the future, and if Liverpool agree to “pay him what he wants”, they will still likely need to pay a hefty fee and wages to secure one.

Liverpool are in a practically identical situation with Virgil van Dijk. The Netherlands (and Liverpool) captain is every bit as important to the team as Salah at the moment, though a year older, and he will also be out of contract at the end of the season unless an extension is agreed. It surely weighs in on the Salah conundrum.

Meanwhile, Trent Alexander-Arnold, at 26, is a completely different problem. It’s very likely that Liverpool have no doubts about paying the “Scouser in their team” handsomely if that’s what it takes to keep him, but Real Madrid have been batting their eyelashes at the England international for some time now, and his decision will likely be influenced by other factors.

But when it comes to Salah (and Van Dijk as well), it’s mostly down to Liverpool and their ability to guess the longevity of his performances at the highest level. For the time being, he’s delivering big-time, with his 10 goals and 10 assists in 17 matches across all competitions playing a huge role in the Reds topping the table both in the Premier League and the Champions League.

But for how long?

That’s the question Liverpool need to ponder.

Iranian Couple Reportedly Jailed For 10 Years After Posting A Dance Video

BBC confirmed that the couple’s arrest came after they posted the video on social media.

CBS News reported that the Iranian state media outlet Mizan claimed Haghighi and Ahmadi were not detained for dancing but for stoking resistance efforts in their Instagram posts by “encouraging people to riot against the country and subversion.”

Mizan disputed the 10-year punishment and claimed the couple received a five-year prison sentence for publishing “a call for protests.”

“It is clear that anti-revolutionary forces have falsely reported the charges by claiming each were sentenced to 10 years,” the Islamic Republic judiciary’s Mizan news agency said, reported Reuters.

“Astiazh Haghighi and Amir Mohammad Ahmadi had published a call for a rally on November 4 and called for riots on their Instagram pages,” Mizan’s statement reads, per CBS News. “During the riots, they used their page to advertise calls, including the call for November 4.”

The couple was individually sentenced by a Tehran court to prison for 10 years and 6 months each, for a total of 21 years combined, on counts of “promotion of impurity and indecency, assembly and collusion against national security, and propaganda against the regime,” the Washington Post said Wednesday. The couple have also been banned from social media and are not allowed to leave the country for two years. While their profiles remain public, there have not been posts on Haghighi’s feed since Sept. 28, 2022. Ahmadi’s last post was at the beginning of September.

Iranians have been protesting in growing numbers against the government’s theocratic rule, and authorities have been cracking down. Much of the public dissent was sparked last year by the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman who was arrested by Iran’s morality police for the improper wearing of a hijab. Amini died days later in their custody.

Iranian officials have since arrested public figures who have spoken out against the government’s reaction to Amini’s death. This includes the arrests of prominent actor Taraneh Alidoosti and celebrity chef Navab Ebrahimi.

Haghighi spoke out in support of Amini in September. In an Instagram post, she wrote, “Hoping tomorrow will be a better tomorrow. Let’s hold each other’s hands and support each other. We are all Iranians and we need to help each other.”

Fans eagerly awaited Amorim’s arrival, keen to see the changes he would implement after the November international break. His tactics have been celebrated and his persona has been praised, and now supporters have been given their first taste of what a team under Amorim could look like.

Man Utd have been criticised for their lack of identity over recent seasons. Even in his initial interview, Amorim made sure to address the changes he would make to implement a style at the club.

He said: “If I have to explain the importance of everything, it is the character, the way we fight, the way we play, and we must have an identity.”

Starting with the hosts, picking up some immediate revenge on Thursday night as they stormed their way to a 3-0 romp in Athens, England are now sat firmly in the driving seat to book an immediate League A return here. In what will be Lee Carsley’s final game in charge, the Three Lions will simply be looking to lay down another statement of intent this weekend. Typhoon Bebinca — known as Beibijia in China — crossed the coast in the Yangtze River Delta region on Monday morning, and is expected to dump heavy rain across Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui provinces as it tracks inland and weakens, according to reports from state media.

The storm is the second to hit China in a matter of weeks, after Super Typhoon Yagi struck Hainan island in the nation’s south, causing damage to wind farms and solar installations before flooding vast areas of northern Vietnam. Two more storms could also near the Chinese coast later in the week.
