Pat Noonan hopes that FC Cincinnati will prove their competitiveness once more as players continue to return, with a trip to Nashville SC up next in MLS.

Cincinnati have won just two of their league matches this season, but have lost both of their games away from home.

They sit 10th in the Eastern Conference, having lost one and drawn one of their last two outings, but Noonan is convinced they can show a threat on Saturday.

Cincinnati are boosted by the returns of Kevin Denkey and Stefan Chirila from international duty, as well as Gilberto Flores from suspension and Miles Robinson after illness.

“We’re always kind of one piece missing from week to week, but that’s part of it. We need to be competitive,” Noonan said.

Nashville, meanwhile, have made their best start to an MLS season after five games, losing just one of their outings so far (W3 D1) and sit fourth in the table.

They have won their last three matches on the bounce, but head coach BJ Callaghan remains wary of the threat that Cincinnati pose, despite their record this season.

“It’s a Cincinnati team that always plays with a good intensity and energy,” he said.

“They’re well coached, and the players have been playing together for a while. It’s an ambitious club that’s made really good additions as they continually try to improve.

“We’re expecting an exciting match. They present challenges on the field that we have to be ready for.”

Cincinnati are one of three teams Hany Mukhtar has faced in the regular season but never scored against.

Mukhtar has registered eight assists against Cincinnati, as only Cristian Espinoza versus Los Angeles FC (12) has more against a single club since the midfielder joined MLS in 2020.

Evander scored both goals in Cincinnati’s draw with Atlanta United on Saturday.

It was his 11th regular-season match with multiple goal contributions since the start of last season, tied for the second most in MLS in that time behind only Lionel Messi (12).

MATCH PREDICTION: NASHVILLE SC WIN

With 10 points (W3 D1 L1), Nashville are off to the best five-match start in club history. They won their last three matches – it is their first three-match winning streak in regular-season play since May-June 2023 (four straight).

Cincinnati have lost only one of their four all-time visits to Nashville (W1 D2), with that defeat coming in July 2021. Cincinnati have recorded a win and a draw in their last two matches at Nashville.

However, after a seven-match road winning streak in league play last April-June, Cincinnati have won only two of their last eight road league games (D1 L5), including losing two in a row on the road to start this season with defeats at Philadelphia Union and Charlotte FC.

Airlines Cut Seats to the U.S. as Canadians Stay Away

Airlines are having to revamp their plans ahead of the peak summer travel season as Canadians avoid trips to the United States amid an escalating trade war between the two neighbors.

A grass roots effort by Canadians to boycott all things American — from U.S. grocery products and alcohol to tourist hot spots — had already set off alarms across the United States travel industry, which warned of multibillion dollar losses.

Now, about two months since President Trump took office and launched an attack against Canada’s economy and its sovereignty, the fallout from Canadians’ resulting anger is becoming clearer.

Canadian airlines are eliminating tens of thousands of seats to the United States this April, a peak period when Canadians travel to warmer destinations. The reductions range from 7 percent by Air Canada to 25 percent by Flair Airlines, a discount airline, according to Visual Approach Analytics, an aviation research company.

“We’re seeing Canadians book away from the U.S.,” said Courtney Miller, the founder and managing director of Visual Approach Analytics. “The Canadian airlines are feeling this effect disproportionately.”

Travel agencies, in response, are also changing how they advertise flight packages.

“We completely stopped promoting the U.S. because of the backlash from the consumers,” said Flemming Friisdahl, the chief executive of The Travel Agent Next Door, a Canadian company with 1,500 travel agents in its network.

The agency is selling far fewer trips to the United States, he added, as travelers redirect their spending to destinations in Europe and elsewhere.

“It’s such a shame that we’re in this position today because we’ve always been amazing neighbors,” Mr. Friisdahl said.

Air Canada, the country’s largest airline, said it would be reducing some U.S. flights to warmer destinations “to reflect commercial demand,” Christophe Hennebelle, a spokesman for the airline, said in an email.

Just how large the drop in demand is remains a little up for debate.

OAG Aviation Worldwide Limited, an analytics company based in the United Kingdom, said advance bookings for routes between Canada and the United States from April through October are down by roughly 70 percent, compared to the same time period last year.

While airlines have seen a decrease in demand, some said it has not been as pronounced as what OAG said.

“No data source is showing a decline of the magnitude that OAG is reporting — for Air Canada or in the market overall,” Mr. Hennebelle said.

Brad Cicero, a spokesman for Porter Airlines, said air travel between Canada and the United States remained robust, adding that the airline was “finalizing the summer schedule to ensure that flights are deployed where there is the greatest demand.”

John Grant, the analyst who prepared the OAG report, said the data had been supplied by a major travel distribution company, but he could not divulge its name because of an agreement with the provider.

Canadian residents took about 586,000 trips to the United States in February, a 13 percent drop from the same month last year, according to Canada’s national census agency. In a recent report, it also found that the number of car trips across the border in February fell to 1.2 million from about 1.5 million in February 2024.

Canadian seasonal travelers who spend part of the year in sunny American states, known as snowbirds, are part of the shifting tide.

Florida is the destination feeling the greatest effect from the reduction in seats on flights from Canada, the report from Visual Approach Analytics said, with airports in Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers and Orlando seeing up to a 30 percent cut in April.

Major airlines in the United States are also responding to falling demand from Canadians.

Scott Kirby, the chief executive officer of United Airlines, recently said the airline had reduced the frequency of numerous routes to Canada because of a “big drop in Canadian traffic” into the United States.

United canceled a new daily route between Toronto and Los Angeles that it had planned to begin in May and said it would also reduce the frequency of other existing routes to Canada.

Beyond any desire to boycott America, a weaker Canadian dollar has made the United States more expensive and is also part of the equation for some travelers.

“The exchange rate certainly helps us be more firm in our in our expression of not wanting to go the U.S.,” said Katherine Velan, a travel adviser based in Montreal. Some travelers are opting for Mexico, Cuba, Costa Rica and other destinations where the Canadian dollar stretches further.

Ms. Velan, who spoke while on vacation herself in Costa Rica, said she and her friends had encountered a group of Americans while dining out who sent a bottle of wine to her table.

“They said, ‘Oh my God, we’re so sorry. We love Canadians.’”

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage attacks ‘woke virus’ in big companies after end of NatWest debanking battle | Politics News

Nigel Farage has blamed a “woke virus” in big companies for his two-year debanking battle with NatWest.

Shortly after Sky News revealed the Reform UK leader has settled the dispute, Mr Farage said he was “caught in the crossfire” of identity politics.

City editor Mark Kleinman reported on Wednesday that a deal had been reached nearly two years after the closure of Mr Farage’s accounts, which led to the resignation of the bank’s boss.

Nick Candy, Reform UK’s treasurer, played a key role in resolving the dispute between the two sides during six hours of mediation talks held at a London law firm on Tuesday.

Under the deal, the bank has agreed to pay Mr Farage damages, while he is understood to have withdrawn a threat of potential civil and criminal proceedings against NatWest.

Mr Farage said: “The war with NatWest is finally over. I thank my friend Nick Candy for sorting that out for me.”

The Reform UK leader refused to reveal details of the settlement or how much compensation he will receive, but reflected on the dispute when questioned about it by Sky News.

“I think a woke virus has gone through corporate America and corporate Britain,” he said. “We have firms like BP pretending they’re all about renewable energy rather than producing oil.”

‘Lunacies of DEI policy’

Mr Farage hit out at “the lunacies of DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) policy, of employing people on the basis of their colour, or their chosen sexuality”. “I was caught in the crossfire,” he said.

Claiming DEI was coming to an end, he added: “We’re seeing the tide turning. You know, when even Mark Zuckerberg announces that he’s axing the DEI department at Meta, you know that a big change is coming.

“And we’re moving more towards a system based on meritocracy than based on identity.”

Although he said he was delighted his war with NatWest was over, Mr Farage criticised Conservative and Labour ministers for failing to legislate to outlaw debanking.

He said former Treasury minister Andrew Griffith, now the shadow business and trade secretary, had promised him the Conservatives would put legislation in place.

But he said that after former prime minister Rishi Sunak called a general election last year, it had not happened.

And attacking financial regulators, he said: “The Financial Conduct Authority was set up to protect people, but it hasn’t lifted a finger to stop people being de-banked.”

Confirming the settlement to Sky News on Wednesday, Mr Farage and NatWest said in a joint statement: “NatWest Group and Nigel Farage MP are pleased to confirm that they have resolved and settled their dispute, and the bank has apologised to Mr Farage. The terms of settlement are confidential.”

Mr Farage was originally expected to seek millions of pounds from the company, alleging that the debanking row had damaged his reputation.

The furore, which claimed the scalp of NatWest’s former chief executive Dame Alison Rose in 2023, centred on whether the bank’s Coutts subsidiary closed Mr Farage’s accounts for commercial or political reasons.

NatWest initially claimed the motivation was commercial, before Mr Farage obtained internal evidence from the bank suggesting his political views had been a pivotal factor in the decision.

CSK strongest playing 11 plus Impact Player options for IPL 2025 ft. Rachin Ravindra & Khaleel Ahmed

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are all set for the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The Men in Yellow will face the Mumbai Indians (MI) in their first match of the competition on Sunday, March 23.

CSK, who narrowly missed out on the playoffs last year, will be keen on reverting to their best form. They’ve assembled a decent squad and have a few options to choose from in different departments. A team that’s known to pick a set of players and back them, the Super Kings might not leave too much up in the air.

CSK’s squad for IPL 2025: Ruturaj Gaikwad, Rahul Tripathi, Shaik Rasheed, Deepak Hooda, Andre Siddarth, Devon Conway, MS Dhoni, Vansh Bedi, Ravindra Jadeja, Shivam Dube, R Ashwin, Sam Curran, Rachin Ravindra, Vijay Shankar, Anshul Kamboj, Jamie Overton, Ramakrishna Ghosh, Noor Ahmad, Shreyas Gopal, Matheesha Pathirana, Khaleel Ahmed, Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Mukesh Choudhary, Gurjapneet Singh, Nathan Ellis.

Devon Conway has served the team well over the years and was signed for a higher price than Rachin Ravindra, but CSK surely can’t bench the Player of the Tournament from the Champions Trophy. Although Conway has an excellent understanding with Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra is a more dynamic player who can also contribute with the ball and should be backed.

There’s merit to Gaikwad batting in the middle order, but he might be intent on making a statement in the powerplay. A batter who has often been criticized for his intent, the CSK skipper can be a destructive opener if he chooses to be.

Middle Order: Rahul Tripathi, Shivam Dube, Sam Curran, Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni (wk)

New signing Rahul Tripathi should slot in at No. 3, with Shivam Dube occupying his usual middle-order role. The duo will need to counter opposition spinners well at Chepauk.

Sam Curran will serve as the frontline fast-bowling all-rounder during IPL 2025, given his prowess with the bat and ability to bowl across phases. He could bat at No. 5, although there’s a good chance the Super Kings will want to bring in a batting impact player ahead of him.

MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja, who are known to finish off innings against pace, will round off the middle order.

Chennai are primed to field three frontline spinners in IPL 2025, with new acquisitions Ravichandran Ashwin and Noor Ahmad set to partner Jadeja in the attack. Noor’s ability to bowl across phases should allow the five-time champions to stick to their strengths and not worry too much about the number of pace options in their XI.

Matheesha Pathirana will lead the pace attack once again, while CSK should pick Khaleel Ahmed over Anshul Kamboj, Gurjapneet Singh, Mukesh Choudhary and Kamlesh Nagarkoti owing to his superior experience and more versatile skillset.

Argentina qualify for World Cup after Bolivia draw

Defending champions Argentina saw their qualification for the 2026 World Cup confirmed before facing Brazil on Tuesday, due to a goalless draw between Bolivia and Uruguay.

Lionel Scaloni’s side started Tuesday’s action six points clear of second-placed Ecuador and 13 ahead of seventh-placed Bolivia.

The top six in the CONMEBOL qualification group are guaranteed a place at the next World Cup, while the team in seventh will qualify for an intra-confederation play-off.

Bolivia’s draw with Uruguay in El Alto made it mathematically impossible for Argentina to drop out of the top six, ahead of their meeting with the Selecao.

They were indebted to a resolute Uruguay defensive performance for rubber-stamping their spot at the World Cup, with goalkeeper Sergio Rochet making seven saves as Bolivia laid siege to his goal – more than any Uruguay goalkeeper in a qualifier since Fernando Muslera against Brazil in October 2021.

Bolivia rattled off 32 shots during the draw, with Ramiro Vaca creating a massive 13 chances for team-mates, none of which were taken.

The long, slow road to a Russia-Ukraine ceasefire

After three days of talks in Saudi Arabia, at last some progress.

Two separate texts outlining agreements between the US and Russia, and the US and Ukraine.

There were some differences but much was the same. All sides agreed to “to ensure safe navigation, eliminate the use of force, and prevent the use of commercial vessels for military purposes in the Black Sea”.

They also agreed “to develop measures for implementing… the agreement to ban strikes against energy facilities of Russia and Ukraine”.

President Zelensky regretted there was no explicit ban on attacks on civilian infrastructure but sounded broadly content.

He told reporters Ukraine would implement the Black Sea and energy ceasefires immediately.

He also got a nod to his agenda with the US saying that it would “remain committed to helping achieve the exchange of prisoners of war, the release of civilian detainees, and the return of forcibly transferred Ukrainian children”.

But then came a third document, issued by the Kremlin, which muddied the waters.

It imposed conditions that did not appear in the original agreement between the US and Russia.

It said the Black Sea ceasefire would come into force only when sanctions were lifted on Russian banks, insurers, companies, ports and ships that would allow it to export more agriculture and fertiliser goods.

In other words, they saw this deal not just as a revival of the old Black Sea Grain Initiative they pulled out of in 2023, but also an opportunity to roll back a significant number of economic sanctions.

However, doing this may take some time and thus delay any maritime ceasefire.

It also may not entirely be in the gift of the US to make all the changes Russia requested.

For example, any return to the SWIFT financial messaging system would require EU approval.

The Kremlin also said the 30-day pause on energy strikes would be back-dated to start on 18 March and could be suspended if one side violated the deal.

In other words, what has been agreed is a fragile step towards some diminution of the fighting in Ukraine but with no guarantee of success amid an atmosphere of mutual distrust.

Even if today’s agreement were to survive, it is still a long way from the comprehensive countrywide ceasefire the US originally wanted.

It is often said that ceasefires are processes, not events. And that is as true as ever for this agreement.

What matters is not the announcement of any ceasefire, but if and how it is implemented. In other words, the proof of the pudding will be in the eating.

Will both sides make this deal work and then live up to it? Because in the answer to those questions we will learn much about what both sides really want.

Do they want a ceasefire to turn into a longer-term peace? Or do they just want to trade while pressing home their advantage on the battlefield?

He experienced severe coughing and choking, and medical tests reportedly confirmed the presence of poison in his system. Assad’s condition is now said to be stable. After his two-decades-long regime was toppled by the Syrian rebels, Assad fled to Russia, where he has been living under Vladimir Putin’s protection since December 8, 2024. Kremlin has released no official information about the alleged incident.

In early April, scores of revelers gather in the city of Kawasaki, about 30 minutes south of Tokyo, to celebrate Kanamara Matsuri – Japan’s infamous penis festival, with a name translating roughly to Festival of the Steel Phallus. Kanamara Matsuri’s main festivities have taken place on the first Sunday of April since 1969 (yes, seriously).

At the festival centering on the um, organ and fertility, attendees get to erect gigantic penis statues on handheld shrines, enjoy penis-shaped lollipops, buy penis-shaped candles, and (obviously) dress as penises. There’s a seemingly endless array of phallic merch!

“Amazing. So fun, so unique, such a different experience,” one Australian tourist who went to this year’s gathering told Euronews. “It’s so weird coming from Australia to see something like this, but it looks like everyone’s having a great time.”

LeBron James will not be with the LA Lakers for the team’s final two games of their current four-game road trip. The Purple and Gold are set to face Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Milwaukee Bucks on Thursday and Nikola Jokic’s Denver Nuggets on Friday. JJ Redick’s team has already lost both games on this road trip.

According to NBA insider Shams Charania, LeBron has left the Lakers and returned to Los Angeles following a recommendation from medical professionals as he continues to recover from a left groin strain.

“Lakers’ LeBron James has returned to Los Angeles, per medical recommendation, as he continues to progress well from a groin strain with the team finishing road trip Thursday in Milwaukee and Friday in Denver, league sources tell ESPN,” Charania tweeted.

LeBron James suffered his latest injury setback during the LA Lakers’ 111-101 loss to the Boston Celtics. The four-time NBA champion left the game in the fourth quarter and went to the locker room, not returning for the remainder of the game.

Afterward, the veteran forward spoke with the media and confirmed that he would travel with the team for the remaining games of the road trip. He was seen on the bench in street clothes during the Purple and Gold’s 111-108 loss to the Brooklyn Nets.

Fans quickly reacted when Shams Charania reported that LeBron James had flown back to Los Angeles. Many netizens agreed that it was a smart decision, believing it would give the superstar the time he needs to recover more effectively.

Canada’s Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly has told the BBC she believes Canada can win the trade war which was sparked by a series of tariffs ordered by US President Donald Trump.

“We are the biggest customer of the US,” Joly told the BBC’s World Service Weekend programme. “We buy more from the Americans than China, Japan, the UK and France combined.”

Joly said tariffs and increased prices are a priority for Canadians as voters prepare to head to the polls to elect a new prime minister later this year.

The US president has imposed 25% tariffs on steel and aluminium imports from Canada. Trump has also vowed to impose a sweeping range of “reciprocal” tariffs on 2 April.

Joly said that because the US and Canadian economies are so intertwined, “we have the most leverage in the world when it comes to the US”.

She noted it is not just Canadians feeling the pain from tariffs, but “hardworking Americans” too.

But Joly said it could be Americans who are the most successful in urging an end to the trade war.

“We think that ultimately the only ones that will be able to help us win this war… are the Americans themselves because they’re the ones that can send a message to their lawmakers,” she told the BBC.

“We can win the hearts and minds of Americans, because ultimately they’re the ones paying for this” she added, noting that both American and Canadian jobs are at risk because of the tariffs.

The trade war is expected to be at the forefront of Canadians’ minds when they head to the polls.

Reports suggest Prime Minister Carney could call for a snap election on Sunday. That election is expected to be held on 28 April.

And it is not just the Liberals making the case against US tariffs, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has also been on the trade war. He has argued he is best equipped to take on Trump.

“There is no good reason to do this to these good people,” Poilievre said earlier this week. “Stop the tariffs, stop the chaos.”

Trump has vowed to impose further tariffs Canada, and other countries around the world, on 2 April – calling these tariffs “the big one”.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has promised to impose reciprocal tariffs if Trump’s tariff threats come to fruition.

It will bring to head a weeks-long back and forth between the North American countries.

The frustration over trade war has led some Canadians to start protesting.

In Toronto on Saturday, Canadians held an “elbows up” protest to push back against President Trump’s stated desire of making Canada the 51st state of the US, and the ongoing trade war.

The phrase, used in hockey to describe defending oneself or fighting back, has been repurposed by protesters in Canada.

In the BBC World Service Weekend interview, Joly was also asked about the upcoming federal election.

She said the Liberal party is “very keen” to make sure Canadians give the party “a clear mandate” to deal with Trump and the threat of tariffs.

Joly said Canadians are “preoccupied” by what is happening in the White House and they are looking for a prime minister who has “strong values”.

The race will likely come down to a choice between Carney and Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre.

Why is Trump using tariffs?

Tariffs are a central part of Trump’s overall economic vision.

He says tariffs will boost US manufacturing and protect jobs, raising tax revenue and growing the domestic economy.

He also wants to restore America’s trade balance with its foreign partners – reducing the gap that exists between how much the US imports from and exports to individual countries.

But he has refused to rule out the prospect of a recession as a result of his trade policies, which sent US stocks sharply down in the days before the metal tariffs took effect.

US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick later said the tariffs were “worth it” even if they did lead to an economic downturn.

Trump’s tariffs initially targeted goods from China, Mexico and Canada.

These accounted for more than 40% of imports into the US in 2024.

But Trump has accused the three countries of not doing enough to end the flow of migrants and illegal drugs such as fentanyl into the US.

All three countries have rejected the accusations.

Cristiano Ronaldo sees no need for Portugal’s players to be nervous as they aim to turn around their Nations League tie with Denmark.

Portugal went down 1-0 in the first leg of the Nations League quarter-final tie against the Danes on Thursday.

Rasmus Hojlund scored in the 78th minute in Copenhagen, where Christian Eriksen had missed a penalty in the first half.

Portugal managed only two shots on target and accumulated just 0.51 expected goals, and though Ronaldo conceded there is tension around the squad, he does not think the nerves are setting in.

“There’s always attitude in the national team. Technical aspects, of course, but other things were lacking too. That’s football, you can’t always play well,” the Portugal captain said.

“The atmosphere wasn’t favourable either. I’ve played 50,000 bad games, and so has the team. Our players, who are used to playing on big stages, have also played bad games. That’s part of it.

“There’s no need to be nervous. The past is the past. I know there are a lot of people who want us to lose, but if the few who are there are united and have good energy, I’m sure we’ll get a great result.

“The air is tense. I’m not hiding it. We’re in a tense moment because we need to win, but that’s the beautiful thing about football.

“I’m calling on the fans to be with us. Let them give us their strength, because we’re going to try to do our best.

“I’ve lost games in 90 minutes, but I’ve never lost in the first leg. There are games like that, there are bad days. I didn’t play at all the other day, the team didn’t play at all, but it’s part of life.

“I want to leave with my head held high. If I score, I’ll be happy, but if I don’t score, let someone else score, what I want is for Portugal to win.”

Ronaldo managed only 30 touches in the first leg, less than any other Portugal player to start the game, though he did complete all of his 24 passes while having two attempts, though he did not hit the target with either of them.

Portugal boasted 68 final third entries but translated that to just 16 touches in Denmark’s box.

Ronaldo, though, defended coach Roberto Martinez, who has come in for criticism.

“I think it’s unfair to criticise the coach, because we’re all in the same boat,” Ronaldo added.

“We lost the game and played badly, but we have the second leg. Think positive and think that things will go well.”
