“We’re going to put tariffs on chips. We’re going to put tariffs on oil and gas. That will happen very soon, I think about the 18th of February. And we’re going to put a lot of tariffs on steel,” he added.

Trump said there was nothing Canada, Mexico or China could do to forestall the more immediate levies, a response to what he says is a failure by those nations to prevent the flow of undocumented migrants and illegal drugs, like fentanyl, across #US borders. And Trump told reporters that the US would “be doing something very substantial” with tariffs targeting the #European Union.

President Donald Trump has called for Harvard University to lose a valuable tax break, hours after his administration announced it is freezing more than $2bn (£1.5bn) in federal funds for the elite institution.

The White House has demanded the oldest university in the US make changes to hiring, admissions and teaching practices which it says will help fight antisemitism on campus.

Since returning to office, Trump has pushed to reshape top universities by threatening to withhold federal funds that are mostly designated for research.

Harvard became the first major US university to reject his administration’s demands on Monday, accusing the White House of trying to “control” its community.

In a Tuesday morning post on social media, Trump threatened to go beyond withholding the federal funds and targeted Harvard tax-exempt status.

Universities, as well as many charities and religious groups, are exempt from paying federal income taxes. This valuable tax break, though, can be removed if the groups become involved in political activities or move away from their stated purposes.

“Perhaps Harvard should lose its Tax Exempt Status and be Taxed as a Political Entity if it keeps pushing political, ideological, and terrorist inspired/supporting “Sickness?” he wrote on Truth Social. “Remember, Tax Exempt Status is totally contingent on acting in the PUBLIC INTEREST!”

Losing the exemption could cost Harvard millions of dollars each year.

The Ivy League institution also has a fund of assets, or endowment, valued at $53bn.

Later on Tuesday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump wanted the university to apologise for what his administration says is continuing tolerance of antisemitism.

“[Trump] wants to see Harvard apologize, and Harvard should apologize,” Leavitt said.

The sweeping changes demanded by the White House would have transformed Harvard’s operations and ceded a large amount of control to the government.

Its letter to Harvard on Friday, obtained by the New York Times, said the university had failed to live up to the “intellectual and civil rights conditions” that justify federal investment.

The letter included 10 categories for proposed changes, including:

reporting students to the federal government who are “hostile” to American values
ensuring each academic department is “viewpoint diverse”
hiring an external government-approved party to audit programmes and departments “that most fuel antisemitic harassment”
checking faculty staff for plagiarism

President Trump has accused leading universities of failing to protect Jewish students when college campuses around the country saw protests against the war in Gaza and US support for Israel last year.

The letter orders the university to take disciplinary action for “violations” during protests.

In explaining its rejection of these demands, Harvard president Alan Garber said the university would not surrender its independence or relinquish its constitutional rights under the First Amendment protecting free speech.

“Although some of the demands outlined by the government are aimed at combating antisemitism, the majority represent direct governmental regulation of the ‘intellectual conditions’ at Harvard,” he said.

Shortly after his letter of resistance was sent, the education department said it was freezing $2.2bn in grants and $60m in contracts to Harvard immediately.

“Harvard’s statement today reinforces the troubling entitlement mindset that is endemic in our nation’s most prestigious universities and colleges,” the Department of Education said in a statement.

The disruption of learning plaguing campuses is unacceptable and the harassment of Jewish students intolerable, the statement said.

A professor of history at Harvard, David Armitage, told the BBC that the school could afford to resist as the richest university in the US and no price was too high to pay for freedom.

“It’s a not unexpected act of entirely groundless and vengeful activity by the Trump administration which wants nothing more than to silence freedom of speech,” he said.

In March, the Trump administration said it was reviewing roughly $256m in federal contracts and grants at Harvard, and an additional $8.7bn in multi-year grant commitments.

Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, a Republican from New York, said on X: “It is time to totally cut off US taxpayer funding to this institution.”

Harvard professors filed a lawsuit in response, alleging the government was unlawfully attacking freedom of speech and academic freedom.

Harvard is one of a number of elite universities in the crosshairs of the new presidency.

Columbia University in New York City agreed to a number of demands last month after the White House pulled $400m in federal funding.

But on Monday Columbia struck a less compliant tone, releasing its own letter that said it was continuing “good faith talks” with the government as it seeks to win back its funding, but also said it would “reject any agreement that would require us to relinquish our independence”.

Polling by Gallup last summer suggested that confidence in higher education has been falling over time among Americans of all political backgrounds, partly driven by a growing belief that universities push a political agenda. The decline was particularly steep among Republicans.

Palestinian Columbia activist Mohsen Mahdawi arrested by DHS at citizenship interview

Mohsen Mahdawi, a Palestinian man involved in protests at Columbia University, was taken into custody by federal agents Monday when he arrived at a citizenship interview in Vermont, his attorneys said in court filings.

Mahdawi’s detention comes as the Trump administration fights to deport fellow Columbia activist Mahmoud Khalil.

Mahdawi’s legal team — which filed a petition asking for his release, claiming his detention violated the First Amendment — said they believe the Trump administration plans to remove Mahdawi from the country under an obscure law allowing deportations if the Secretary of State decides someone poses an “adverse foreign policy consequences for the United States.” The administration cited the same provision to detain Khalil.

“The Trump administration detained Mohsen Mahdawi in direct retaliation for his advocacy on behalf of Palestinians and because of his identity as a Palestinian,” his attorney, Luna Droubi, alleged in a statement. “His detention is an attempt to silence those who speak out against the atrocities in Gaza. It is also unconstitutional.”

CBS News has reached out to the Department of Homeland Security for comment.

Mohsen Mahdawi

Mahdawi’s attorney Luna Droubi — who filed a petition asking for his release — said in a statement Mahdawi’s legal team has “not received confirmation as to his whereabouts despite numerous attempts to locate him.” Federal Judge William Sessions temporarily barred the government from removing Mahdawi from Vermont.

Mahdawi was born in a West Bank refugee camp and has been a U.S. lawful permanent resident for the last decade, according to his lawyers. He completed a philosophy program at Columbia late last year, and was expected to graduate in May before seeking a master’s degree from the university this fall.

Khalil and Mahdawi co-founded Columbia’s Palestinian Student Union in 2023, Mahdawi’s lawyers said in court documents. Khalil later spoke at campus protests over Israel’s war in the Gaza Strip, which began after Hamas attacked southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023.

Mahdawi has drawn attention in the past. Betar USA — a controversial pro-Israel group that regularly encourages the Trump administration to detain pro-Palestinian protest leaders — tweeted a video of Mahdawi in January and said he’s on the organization’s “deport list.”

In a 2023 interview with CBS News’ “60 Minutes,” Mahdawi told Bill Whitaker about a campus rally during which an unidentified person yelled an antisemitic statement. Mahdawi said he was “shocked” and told the person, “you don’t represent us.”

Mahdawi is the latest student to face immigration detention. Khalil, who also holds a green card, was detained outside his Columbia-owned apartment last month. The government is seeking his removal from the country, accusing him of supporting Hamas and participating in “antisemitic protests and disruptive activities.” When asked to provide evidence for Khalil’s detention, the government cited a memo from Secretary of State Marco Rubio that said that Khalil’s role in protests on the campus of Columbia University is in conflict with American foreign policy objectives but did not provide any evidence of Khalil declaring support for Hamas.

Tufts University student Rumeysa Ozturk was detained weeks later, with her attorneys claiming she was targeted for co-authoring an op-ed in the student newspaper.

Khalil and Ozturk are both detained in Louisiana. A federal immigration judge ruled last week the government can move forward with its push to deport Khalil, but he has until later this month to seek relief from deportation. His lawyers have suggested they will appeal, and he’s separately suing over his detention. Ozturk is also suing for her release, and her attorneys faced off against the Trump administration in a hearing Monday.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has defended the practice of revoking visas, writing on X after Khalil’s arrest, “We will be revoking the visas and/or green cards of Hamas supporters in America so they can be deported.”

Julian Alvarez scored two penalties as Atletico Madrid came from behind to beat bottom side Real Valladolid 4-2 at Riyadh Air Metropolitano.

Giuliano Simeone and Alexander Sorloth were also on target for Diego Simeone’s side, who moved back within three points of second-place Real Madrid, and seven of LaLiga leaders Barcelona.

Valladolid had lost 10 of their 11 previous games, but took a surprise lead in the 21st minute. Mamadou Sylla calmly converted from the penalty spot after Clement Lenglet was penalised for handball following a VAR review.

Atletico equalised with a penalty of their own soon after. Alvarez made no mistake after VAR ruled Javi Sanchez had fouled Simeone, who then completed the turnaround in the 27th minute.

The visitors were level again on 56 minutes when Sanchez’s free-kick deflected off Conor Gallagher, and wrong-footed Jan Oblak on its way into the net.

However, Los Rojiblancos struck twice in the last 20 minutes to get themselves over the line.

Alvarez struck again from 12 yards after Henrique fouled Marcos Llorente, while substitute Alexander Sorloth’s close-range finish put the contest beyond Valladolid.

Atletico have now won 23 points from losing positions this season, more than any other side in the big five European leagues.

Although, it was not easy for the hosts, who scored and conceded a penalty in the first half of a LaLiga for the first time since March 2020 against Sevilla.

Alvarez, meanwhile, became the third Atletico player to score two penalties in a single game during the Simeone era, after Diego Costa in 2013 and Saul Niguez in 2020.

Sanchez had got Valladolid back on level terms at 2-2, as he became the second defender to score at least two direct free-kicks in a single LaLiga campaign after Florian Lejeune in 2022-23 (also two).

Wolverhampton Wanderers are hunting their fourth-straight Premier League win when they face Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon.

Wolves’ impressive run of form, which has included victories over two of the bottom three, has all but secured their status in the top flight for next season. Their advantage over 18th-place Ipswich Town, who they beat last week, ins now 12 points with seven games left.

Joao Pereira’s side will move to within two points of their upcoming visitors should they extend their winning run to four games.

Spurs have long given up on their domestic campaign and are tracking towards their worst-ever Premier League season despite beating Southampton 3-1 last weekend. Ange Postecoglou’s side are 14th with a mere 37 points.

Their season, and Postecoglou’s future, hinge on Europe. They performed impressively after falling behind early to Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday but could only muster a 1-1 draw at home in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final.

Jean-Ricner Bellegarde should continue in Cunha’s absence, with Jorgen Strand Larsen poised to lead the hosts’ line. The towering forward scored an excellent late equaliser in the reverse fixture.

It’s a familiar tale on the injury front for Wolves, who are still without Enso Gonzalez, Sasa Kalajdzic, Yerson Mosquera, and Leon Chiwome.

Mathys Tel and Wilson Odobert should start in attack, with Richarlison potentially offering Dominic Solanke respite after he made his first appearance since February on Thursday.

These two played out a 2-2 draw in the reverse fixture back in December, and we could enjoy something similar on Sunday afternoon. The handbrake should be off at Molineux, with Wolves likely to take advantage of Postecoglou’s willingness to preserve Micky van de Ven for Spurs’ Europa League campaign.

The visitors are far less secure in the Dutchman’s absence, and a reshuffle in midfield will likely render them more porous. However, their rotation in attack could work in their favour. Rests for Postecoglou’s preferred options are required, and a couple of fresh faces should help them get at an improving Wolves backline.

This could be an entertaining affair with the spoils being shared.

Trump will head to the White House’s Rose Garden at 4 p.m. Wednesday, where he will be joined by members of his Cabinet to unveil his highly anticipated tariff plan that aims to unshackle the U.S. from its decades-long reliance on goods made overseas.

“On Wednesday, it will be Liberation Day in America, as President Trump has so proudly dubbed it,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told members of the media Monday.

Trump has for weeks promoted April 2 as America’s “Liberation Day,” and he will announce reciprocal tariffs on foreign nations that export goods to the U.S. Trump and his administration have remained relatively tight-lipped on details of the tariff plan, instead noting that upcoming tariffs will reportedly even the playing field for the U.S. on trade policy.

“I think it’s going to be something that’s going to bring a lot of wealth back to our country, tremendous wealth back to our country, actually,” Trump told the media Monday. “And other countries are understanding because they’ve been ripping us for 50 years, longer.”

The Trump administration has argued that placing tariffs on nations that produce goods overseas will encourage industries to establish manufacturing and production operations on U.S. soil to avoid the additional tax. The administration has said the tariffs will lead to an increase in jobs available to U.S. workers as overseas companies set up shop in the U.S.

The president said Sunday the tariff plan would affect “all countries” and has reiterated that his administration will be “nice” to foreign nations compared to how they have charged the U.S.

“We’re being nicer than they were,” he said while speaking to the media after signing an unrelated executive order Monday. “We have a lot of countries, friend and foe. I always say friend and foe, but the friend in many cases is worse than the foe. They took advantage of us, and we are going to be very nice by comparison to what they were.

“The numbers will be lower than what they’ve been charging us, and, in some cases, maybe substantially lower. But we sort of have a world obligation, perhaps,” he added. “But we’re going to be very nice, relatively speaking. We’re going to be very kind.”

Judge allows Columbia graduate Mahmoud Khalil’s deportation

A US judge has ruled the Trump administration can deport Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia University graduate detained last month over his role in pro-Palestinian protests.

Mr Khalil, a permanent legal US resident, has not been charged with a crime. In a letter written from the facility, he has said his “arrest was a direct consequence” of speaking out for Palestinian rights.

The government has cited a Cold War-era immigration law, declaring that his presence in the US was adverse to American foreign policy interests.

The immigration court’s ruling does not mean Mr Khalil would be immediately removed from the country. The judge gave his lawyers until 23 April to appeal against the order.

The activist has been held at a Louisiana detention centre since 8 March, when immigration officers told him he was being deported for taking part in protests against the war in Gaza.

The 30-year-old was a prominent voice at Columbia University’s protests against the war in Gaza last year.

The Trump administration has cited a 1952 law that empowers the government to order someone deported if their presence in the country could pose unfavourable consequences for American foreign policy.

The judge said the Trump administration was allowed to move forward with its effort to deport Mr Khalil because the argument that he poses “adverse foreign policy consequences” for the US is “facially reasonable”.

Mr Khalil, who was otherwise silent, addressed the court after the ruling.

“I would like to quote what you said last time that there’s nothing that’s more important to this court than due process rights and fundamental fairness,” Mr Khalil said in court.

“Clearly what we witnessed today, neither of these principles were present today or in this whole process,” he said. “This is exactly why the Trump administration has sent me to this court, 1,000 miles away from my family.”

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) described the decision as “pre-written”.

The rights group said the ruling came less than 48 hours after the US government “handed over the ‘evidence’ they have on Mr. Khalil – which included nothing more than a letter from Secretary of State Marco Rubio that made clear Mr Khalil had not committed a crime and was being targeted solely based on his speech”.

The government, particularly Rubio, has said its efforts to deport Mr Khalil were also to “protect Jewish students from harassment and violence in the United States” even if his activities were “otherwise lawful”. They have not

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem praised the judge’s ruling on Friday.

“It is a privilege to be granted a visa or green card to live and study in the United States of America,” she wrote on social media. “When you advocate for violence, glorify and support terrorists that relish the killing of Americans, and harass Jews, that privilege should be revoked, and you should not be in this country. Good riddance.”

Mr Khalil’s legal team has repeatedly said evidence of antisemitism has not been presented.

His lawyer, Marc Van Der Hout, condemned the decision and said his team was going to fight for Mr Khalil’s “right to speak out against what’s happening in the US”.

The legal team also said they expected further hearings in the case.

“Today was historic in its unfairness,” Johnny Sinodis, another member of Mr Khalil’s legal team, said during a news conference.

Mr Khalil has also filed a federal court lawsuit in New Jersey challenging his arrest as unconstitutional. His lawyers have said the outcome of that case could block his deportation if they win.

The Trump administration has separately alleged that the student committed immigration fraud by failing to disclose certain information on his green card application.

This includes working for the British embassy in Beirut and the United Nations agency for Palestinian migrants and refugees. But the government has not submitted any new evidence related to this.

In a statement, White House Assistant Press Secretary Taylor Rogers said the Trump administration is “committed to the enforcement of our immigration laws and will take swift action to remove aliens who pose serious adverse foreign policy consequences for the United States”.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says he has rejected US President Donald Trump’s proposal to give the US access to $500bn of Ukraine’s vast reserves of critical minerals.

Ukraine holds huge deposits of rare earth minerals and natural resources; including lithium, titanium, coal, gas, oil and uranium.

Many of the minerals, however, are in areas now controlled by Russian troops.
