In early April, scores of revelers gather in the city of Kawasaki, about 30 minutes south of Tokyo, to celebrate Kanamara Matsuri – Japan’s infamous penis festival, with a name translating roughly to Festival of the Steel Phallus. Kanamara Matsuri’s main festivities have taken place on the first Sunday of April since 1969 (yes, seriously).

At the festival centering on the um, organ and fertility, attendees get to erect gigantic penis statues on handheld shrines, enjoy penis-shaped lollipops, buy penis-shaped candles, and (obviously) dress as penises. There’s a seemingly endless array of phallic merch!

“Amazing. So fun, so unique, such a different experience,” one Australian tourist who went to this year’s gathering told Euronews. “It’s so weird coming from Australia to see something like this, but it looks like everyone’s having a great time.”

Things don’t get much easier for Madrid, who have the small matter of two Madrid derbies to contest in the last 16.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side will be at home for the first leg against Atletico Madrid, who will have the advantage of a feverish Metropolitan crowd for the return fixture.

If Madrid make it out of the derby, they will likely bump into Arsenal, who are heavy favourites to beat PSV Eindhoven in their last 16 tie.

Another English heavyweight could be lying in wait in the semi-finals. Liverpool are among the favourites to win this entire tournament, but they’re not the only threat in this side of the bracket as the Reds have a last 16 tie against Paris Saint-Germain to look forward to.

Liverpool won when they faced Madrid in the group stage earlier in the season, but Madrid had the last laugh when these two sides met in the 2017/18 and 2021/22 finals.

Club Brugge and Aston Villa are also among the possible opponents.

There is a mouthwatering possibility that the Champions League final could play host to El Clasico, with Barcelona among the favourites to emerge from a relatively simple side of the bracket which also includes Bayern Munich.

Madrid would be out for revenge against Barcelona, who have humiliated them twice already this season. Ancelotti’s side fell 4-0 in La Liga and 5-2 in the Supercopa de Espana final. They are not due to meet again until May 11, just three weeks before the final of this competition.

While Barcelona and Bayern are the heavy favourites from this side of the bracket, there are six teams looking to cause an upset: Feyenoord, Inter, Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Dortmund, Lille and Benfica.

Zelensky Meets Kellogg, U.S. Envoy to Ukraine, Amid Public Spat With Trump

President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine met with President Trump’s special envoy in Kyiv on Thursday — a day after a public feud between the Ukrainian and American leaders threatened to derail diplomatic efforts toward peace talks.

The meeting with Keith Kellogg, the special envoy to Ukraine and Russia, was meant to discuss paths to ending the war that would safeguard Ukraine’s interests. There was also hope that it might help defuse tensions between Washington and Kyiv after Mr. Trump labeled Mr. Zelensky a “dictator” and the Ukrainian president accused him of echoing Russian propaganda.

Whether any progress was made remains unclear: a news conference scheduled for after the meeting was canceled at the request of the United States, according to Mr. Zelensky’s office, although Mr. Kellogg and the Ukrainian leader appeared together for photos.

Reporters who had gathered for the news conference were told to go home. The U.S. Embassy in Kyiv did not immediately comment.

“It is a bad signal,” Solomiia Bobrovska, a member of the defense and intelligence committee of Parliament, said in a phone interview, referring to the canceled news conference.

Mr. Zelensky later wrote on social media that he had a “productive meeting” with Mr. Kellogg, in which they discussed the situation on the battlefield, the return of prisoners of war and security guarantees for Ukraine as part of a peace deal. “Strong Ukraine-U.S. relations benefit the entire world,” Mr. Zelensky said.

Ukraine, wary of straining ties with Washington, its biggest ally, had suggested that the meeting would aim to stop the feud from escalating into an out-of-control dispute. “It is crucial for us that the meeting and our overall cooperation with America be constructive,” Mr. Zelensky said in his nightly address on Wednesday.

But there have been concerns in Ukraine that Mr. Kellogg, a retired U.S. general and longtime adviser to Mr. Trump on security matters, has been sidelined from the administration’s negotiating team, since he was not part of the U.S. delegation that met with Russian officials this week to initiate what the White House said were peace talks.

Mr. Kellogg has said that the United States is conducting separate discussions on a potential peace deal with Russia and with Ukraine and that he is leading the U.S.-Ukraine track while Steve Witkoff, Mr. Trump’s Middle East envoy, is in charge of the U.S.-Russia track.

The two envoys will then return to Washington to compare notes and determine the next steps, according to Mr. Kellogg.

He arrived in Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital, on Wednesday morning for a three-day visit. Speaking from the city’s railway station upon arrival, Mr. Kellogg said that his mission would be to “sit and listen” to Ukraine’s concerns. He also said that he understood Ukraine’s “need for security guarantees” in any postwar settlement.

Later that day, he met with a series of top Ukrainian officials, including Gen. Oleksandr Syrsky, the head of the Ukrainian army; Gen. Kyrylo Budanov, the head of Ukraine’s military intelligence agency; and Andriy Yermak, the head of Mr. Zelensky’s office.

Beyond discussing a possible path to a peace deal with Mr. Zelensky, Mr. Kellogg had been expected to address a potential agreement that would grant the United States access to Ukrainian natural resources as compensation for past aid and, possibly, as a guarantee for future assistance. Mr. Trump has insisted that he wants payback for the money that Washington has invested in Ukraine’s defense.

Scott Bessent, the U.S. Treasury secretary, presented Mr. Zelensky with a draft of the agreement last week. But Mr. Zelensky rejected the proposal — an extraordinary demand to grant the United States a 50 percent interest in Ukraine’s natural resources like minerals, oil and gas — because it did not tie resource access to security guarantees for Kyiv.

Mr. Trump has demanded $500 billion of Ukrainian critical minerals, a request that Mr. Zelensky dismissed as “not serious” during a news conference on Wednesday.

Mike Waltz, the U.S. national security adviser, on Thursday told reporters that Mr. Trump’s frustration with Mr. Zelensky was “multifold,” and that it included a perceived lack of appreciation by the Ukrainian president for the United States.

He criticized Mr. Zelensky for not being more open to a U.S. push for Ukrainian natural resources, saying that he “needs to come back to the table.”

Mr. Trump expressed frustration with Mr. Zelensky’s refusal to sign the deal, telling reporters on Air Force One on Wednesday night that Mr. Bessent had been “treated rather rudely.” Mr. Trump insisted that he would resurrect the deal with Ukraine’s leader, “or things are going to not make him too happy.”

A Ukrainian official with knowledge of the talks on Thursday said Mr. Zelensky told Mr. Kellogg he wanted to speed up work on a potential deal and suggested creating a multilevel, bilateral working group to address the security, economic and legal aspects of an agreement. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a private meeting.

“Ukraine is ready for a strong, effective investment and security agreement with the President of the United States,” Mr. Zelensky wrote on social media.

In some ways, Mr. Kellogg could be an ally to Kyiv. He has adopted a more aggressive stance toward Russia than Mr. Trump and some of his advisers, proposing that Washington could increase sanctions to push Russia toward a peace deal and favorably viewing the Biden administration’s approval for Ukraine to strike inside Russia with long-range missiles.

Ms. Bobrovska, the lawmaker, said she hoped “Kellogg will play a pro-Ukrainian role and do his best” to change Mr. Trump’s mind.

Mr. Kellogg’s three-day visit to Ukraine is unusually long for an American official. Since the war began nearly three years ago, U.S. officials have typically limited their trips to a single day for security reasons.

Mr. Zelensky said on Wednesday that he hoped Mr. Kellogg could talk to civilians and service members to grasp the reality of the war, including through a possible visit to the front line.

“It’s important to feel the atmosphere on the ground,” Mr. Zelensky said.

On Mr. Kellogg’s first night in Ukraine, air defense systems worked to repel a large Russian assault on energy infrastructure. The booms of antiaircraft missiles echoed across central Kyiv as the air alert blared for more than seven hours.

as Area General Manager of Indonesia and Malaysia and General
Manager of Anantara Desaru Coast Resort & Villas, effective 1 July
2024.

In addition to managing the Anantara Desaru
Coast, Torsten’s responsibilities will include oversight of the Avani
Sepang Goldcoast Resort, Anantara Uluwatu Bali Resort and the

Torsten has over three decades of experience
working in the hospitality industry and has held leadership positions in several major destinations worldwide, including
Thailand, Indonesia, Maldives, Germany, the U.S. and U.K.

Most recently, Torsten served as the

Real Madrid will hope to enjoy an evening away from refereeing controversy when they return to Champions League action to face Manchester City on Wednesday.

No team has received more penalties in La Liga this term than the Spanish champions, although there’s no denying that Carlo Ancelotti’s side have been on the receiving end of some rather harsh decisions in recent weeks.

A “miscommunication” resulted in Jude Bellingham’s dismissal at Osasuna on Saturday, but Ancelotti will have last week’s match-winner available for Manchester City’s visit.

The ‘modern Clasico’ has rarely disappointed, and a 3-2 Madrid win at the Etihad means we’re poised for more of the typical thrills this fixture supplies in Wednesday’s second leg. Here’s the team Ancelotti could pick as the 15-time Champions League winners aim to book their place in the round of 16.

GK: Thibaut Courtois – Courtois wasn’t particularly busy at the Etihad yet he still conceded twice. The excellent Belgian shot-stopper has found clean sheets hard to come by this season amid Madrid’s defensive woes.

CM: Eduardo Camavinga – Camavinga is still finding his groove after recently returning from a muscle injury, but he’s currently Madrid’s best all-phase midfielder and a shoo-in to start on Wednesday night.

CM: Dani Ceballos – Luka Modric got the nod at Osasuna, and although Ceballos had an up-and-down night in Manchester, Ancelotti is bound to entrust him again in the second leg.

RW: Rodrygo – There was respite for Rodrygo at the weekend, with Brahim Diaz earning a rare La Liga start. He plays an underrated role down Madrid’s right.

AM: Jude Bellingham – Last week’s match-winner shone in the second half and will be keen to produce a statement performance under the bright lights of the Bernabeu given what went down on Saturday.

LW: Vinicius Junior – The 2024 Ballon d’Or runner-up had the last laugh in front of the taunters at the Etihad, teeing up Bellingham’s winner with an erroneous lobbed effort. Vini Jr so often turns on the style in this competition, especially at home.

ST: Kylian Mbappe – Mbappe’s scored in three straight games and has 11 in 13 at the start of 2025. It’s fair to say he’s found his feet in the Spanish capital.

Robert Lewandowski’s first-half penalty earned Barcelona a hard-fought 1-0 win over Rayo Vallecano to move back to the summit of the LaLiga standings.

After draws for fellow title hopefuls Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid at the weekend, Hansi Flick’s side took advantage to keep their hopes of a 28th league crown alive.

Barcelona started strongly in the contest, with Lewandowski unable to guide an early header on target after good work from Raphinha on the edge of the box.

Andrei Ratiu then almost presented the hosts with the opener after a poor header back to his goalkeeper, but Raphinha dragged his effort wide of Augusto Batalla’s goal.

But Barcelona’s dominance eventually prevailed in the 28th minute when Pathe Ciss unnecessary foul on Inigo Martinez from a corner saw the referee point to the spot.

Lewandowski stepped up and sent Batalla the wrong way to open the scoring and net his 20th LaLiga goal of the season.

Barcelona continued to dominate proceedings, with Lamine Yamal denied twice in quick succession by Batalla, but Rayo Vallecano had the chance to snatch a point late on.

A glorious pass from Pep Chavarria was collected by Adri Embarba, with his cross finding an unmarked Jorge de Frutos, but his diving header cleared the crossbar.

While not at their best, Barcelona ensured they put the pressure on their Madrid rivals with a battling display at the Camp Nou.

Flick’s side ended the contest with an expected goals (xG) total of 2.53 from their 14 shots to their opponents’ 0.99 from their nine attempts, though the defining moment came through a regular piece of play for Barcelona this season.

Indeed, Lewandowski’s penalty was the fourth spot-kick they have been awarded this season. In LaLiga this term, that is a joint-division-high total (level with Alaves and Leganes), with the Pole scoring three of those four from 12 yards.

Trump’s Middle East peace broker now at centre of Ukraine talks

When US President Donald Trump wanted someone to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin last week to open negotiations for a potential deal to end the Russia-Ukraine war, he didn’t dispatch his secretary of state.

The man he sent to the Kremlin to handle a titanic geopolitical challenge does not even have a diplomatic background.

Instead Trump picked his personal friend, golf buddy and billionaire real estate developer Steve Witkoff.

The president has made Witkoff his Middle East envoy. But last week the Bronx-born businessman found himself in discussions about ending a conflict in Eastern Europe – having been “with [Putin] for a very extended period, like about three hours”, in Trump’s words.

Witkoff was in Moscow to help facilitate a deal that saw the US and Russia swap prisoners, which was seen as signalling a possible thaw in relations between the two countries.

Witkoff also played a part in brokering the current ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, for which both Trump and his predecessor Joe Biden took credit.

Though he was not yet officially in his post, Witkoff flew to Tel Aviv to meet Netanyahu before the deal was brokered in Qatar. He then spent time with Biden’s envoy Brett McGurk in Doha, who later praised their cooperation, calling it a “very close partnership, even friendship”, according to the Washington Post.

Witkoff is now returning to the region, specifically Saudi Arabia, for the first US-Russian face-to-face talks over the war in Ukraine after Trump had his own call with Putin. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and national security adviser Mike Waltz are also attending.

But the bold moves made by Trump’s team are stirring concern among Western allies, who fear a new world order in which key players are shut out of discussions. Ukraine and other European nations were not invited to the Saudi meeting.

So, who is Witkoff – dubbed by US media as “the man in the room”, taking centre stage as more potentially consequential international talks take place?

He was one of Trump’s first picks for his top team after his presidential election win in November. Trump wrote: “Steve will be an unrelenting voice for PEACE, and make us all proud.”

“The president sees Steve as one of the world’s great dealmakers,” a White House official told Axios. Witkoff’s preferred negotiating tactic was to use charm, according to another associate, but he could also turn up the pressure.

The 67-year-old was raised in Long Island, New York and trained as a real estate developer in one of America’s most cut-throat markets.

As a long-time Republican donor, he has known Trump for decades, and, like the president, made his fortune in real estate in both New York and Florida.

Addressing last year’s Republican National Convention, during which he recalled speaking to Trump in the aftermath of an assassination attempt, Witkoff called the other man his “true and dear friend… in good times and bad times”.

The two men are also long-time golfing companions, US Senator Lindsey Graham told NBC News. “Steve and I would be the two guys who would play Trump and somebody else, and lose,” Graham said.

It was during a shared golfing session in Florida last September that another alleged would-be Trump attacker was foiled by the Secret Service. Trump said he and Witkoff were bundled into golf carts as agents moved to counter a suspect in the bushes.

Graham also said that Witkoff first mentioned his interest in becoming Middle East envoy to Trump during a lunchtime conversation. “That stunned me, because I didn’t know he was interested in the Mideast,” Graham said.

Witkoff’s remit as Middle East envoy is also reported to include diplomacy with Iran. People familiar with the matter told the Financial Times he had been chosen to spearhead a nuclear deal with Tehran as part of a broader plan to “stop the wars” in the region.

Witkoff’s deal-making skills were on display during Trump’s 2024 campaign. He helped to ease tension between Trump and his defeated Republican presidential primary rival, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

Witkoff also reportedly met Georgia Governor Brian Kemp to smooth things over, after Kemp drew Trump’s scorn for refusing to support his unfounded claims of fraud in the 2020 election which Trump lost to Biden.

He currently serves as chairman of the University of Miami’s business school real estate advisory board, and was appointed by Trump during his first term to the board of trustees of the John F Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Knife Attack Suspect in Austria Was Inspired by ISIS, Official Says

A Syrian asylum seeker who the Austrian authorities said killed a teenager and wounded five other people in a knife attack in Villach, Austria, was inspired by the Islamic State militant group, officials said on Sunday.

The man, who was detained after the attack on Saturday, had become radicalized online, said Austria’s interior minister, Gerhard Karner. The police said they believed that the victims were chosen at random.

The suspect is 23 years old, came to Austria from Syria in 2020 and was later given asylum, according to the interior ministry.

The attack comes days after an Afghan citizen, who came to Germany as a child refugee, drove a car into a crowd of people at a union march in Munich, 150 miles from Villach, killing two people and wounding nearly 40.

In July, the singer Taylor Swift was forced to cancel three concerts in Vienna, Austria’s capital, after the authorities learned of a plan to attack the venue by two teenagers who had become radicalized Islamists online. Neither was a refugee.

Austria’s far-right Freedom Party has profited from fears of foreigners, especially young male asylum seekers. Campaigning on a slogan of “Fortress Austria,” the party came in first in elections last year, with 29 percent of the vote. Last week it gave up its quest to form a governing coalition in Austria’s current Parliament, but its popularity continues to rise, according to polls.

The attack in Villach, a quaint city in the south near the Italian and Slovenian borders, happened around 4 p.m. on Saturday on the city’s old town square, where a man started stabbing random people with a folding knife, the police in Villach said.

In the seven minutes between when the police got the first call and the time he was apprehended, the man killed a 14-year-old and wounded five other people, they said.

The attack was eventually stopped by a 42-year-old Syrian citizen who saw the violence unfolding, according to the authorities.

“A witness saw the event and decided to intervene — he rammed the perpetrator with his car and thus probably prevented worse things from happening,” said Michaela Kohlweiss, the state police director who is in charge of the investigation.

Two officers were able to restrain and then arrest the suspect immediately afterward.

On Thursday, the police briefly believed that there was a second assailant involved and brought in extra forces, the Austrian equivalent of S.W.A.T. teams and two helicopters. But the authorities now believe the suspect acted alone.

The police said on Sunday the suspect did not have a police record and had not been monitored by domestic intelligence.

When officers searched his apartment, however, they found clear evidence of “Islamist thought” and Islamic State flags hanging on the walls, they said, but no weapons or explosives.

The police said that they were still investigating the suspect’s background and motivation, and that it appeared he had become radicalized online in a very short period.

Peter Kaiser, Carinthia’s center-left governor, called for the “harshest consequences” for the attacker, saying on social media that the perpetrator “must be put on trial, imprisoned, and deported.” Herbert Kickl, the firebrand leader of the Freedom Party, called the attack a “system failure of the first order.”

The city’s mayor, Günther Albel, wrote on social media: “To all those who sow hatred and violence, I say: You will not win.”

Millions of Syrians sought refuge in Europe, including in Austria, after a popular uprising against the nation’s autocratic longtime leader, Bashar al-Assad, that began in 2011 and turned into a civil war. The large number of arrivals has strained social safety nets in Europe and stirred concern about assimilation, which has at times taken an openly xenophobic form and provided an opening for right-wing, nationalist political movements.

The collapse of the Assad regime in December prompted several European countries to pause legal proceedings on asylum status for Syrians. Austria has said it plans to deport Syrians whose claims for asylum fail.

Violence is relatively uncommon in Austria, which was ranked as the fifth-safest country in the world as of 2023, according to the Global Peace Index.

Villach knife attack leave teenager dead and five wounded

A 14-year-old boy has been killed and five people seriously wounded in a knife attack in southern Austria.

Police said the suspect is a 23-year-old Syrian asylum seeker who was detained at the scene in Villach, a town near the border with Italy and Slovenia.

Police are yet to establish a motive but have involved extremism specialists in the investigation, a spokesman told BBC News.

The incident took place around 16:00 local time (15:00 GMT) near the town’s main square. Two of the five people injured were in a serious condition as of Saturday evening.

A delivery worker who had driven his vehicle at the attacker helped prevent more injuries, police said.

The driver – also a Syrian man – said he witnessed the attack as he was driving by and deliberately rammed the knifeman.

The suspect was arrested shortly after by two female police officers. As of Saturday evening, he was still being interrogated, police said.

Some witness reports initially indicated a potential second attacker, leading to police shutting down train travel in the attack’s immediate aftermath.

However, local police told BBC News they were confident only one knifeman was involved.

Austrian law means the attacker’s identity has not been released but police confirmed he is a 23-year-old Syrian man who lived locally.

He had a temporary residence permit and was waiting for a decision on his asylum application.

Police initially said four people were wounded but a fifth person later came forward with minor injuries.

The identity of the teenager who was killed has also not yet been disclosed.

The attack comes amid national debates over asylum laws and a political crisis following an election last year which saw the far-right Freedom Party come out on top for the first time.

However it has failed to form a coalition government, leaving Austria’s President Alexander Van der Bellen weighing up whether to call a snap election, form a minority government, or invite other parties or a group of experts to try and form an administration.

Herbet Kickl, the head of the Freedom Party, seized on the Villach attack, saying in a statement that Austria needs a “rigorous crackdown on asylum”.

Peter Kaiser of the centre-left Social Democratic Party – who is the governor of Carinthia, the region where Villach is located – described the attack as an “unimaginable atrocity”.

He said the stabbings should not lead to “hateful” reactions while urging the government and European Union to tighten asylum policy.

SLAM: You’re currently the frontrunner to win MVP this season—according to Vegas odds, according to the media, etc. How much do you pay attention to stuff like that, and how big of a goal is it for you?

SGA: It’s another blessing. So many things [happened] from then to now for me to get here. Some of it is luck, some of it is helping hands, some of it is hard work. A lot of stars have to align and things have for me, and I’m super blessed for that. The feeling is amazing. Obviously, nothing is won in January, clearly. But to be playing at the level that I am, to be recognized, to my team winning—things are obviously going in the right direction. I haven’t reached any of my goals yet, so I’m not satisfied. I have a lot more to accomplish. The work won’t stop. But yeah, headed down the right path, for sure.

SLAM: Anthony Edwards made a comment recently that you were the clear-cut MVP this season and should’ve been the MVP last season. What’s it like having other star players give you that type of praise?
SGA: Your peers do it at a high level. They understand the grind it takes, understand the day to day. Nobody understands more than them. To me, their opinion holds the most weight because they do the exact same thing that I do at the same level and understand what it takes. So it’s a good feeling.

SLAM: Do you agree with his assertion that you should’ve won last year?

SGA: Umm, I don’t really care about [not winning it last year] much. It’s something I can’t control. I can’t control votes. I tried to give last year my all, tried to be the best version of myself. And I guess that wasn’t enough. So, my mindset in the summertime was to try to make sure that this year it was enough.

SLAM: There are people online who compare you to Allen Iverson. Have you seen those comparisons?

SGA: I haven’t heard those, but I try not to get into social media and scouring through social media while I’m going through the season. But that’s an amazing feeling as well. Allen Iverson was, like, my favorite basketball player growing up—the reason why I had braids as a kid, wore a headband, the reason why I started playing basketball. So, it’s a cool feeling. The things he’s done for the game, for the culture—on and off the court—are second to none. So that’s pretty cool.

SLAM: Did you study his game when you were growing up?

SGA: I never really studied much of his game, just ’cause I was younger and I just wasn’t studying [yet]. I was just watching as a fan. But something that stood out about him was his supreme confidence. On the court, he played the same way. His confidence never wavered. Good shot, bad shot. He made four in a row, five in a row. He always played the same way. Played hard. And off the court, he clearly had the utmost confidence in his fashion. His swag. A story that always stuck with me was him taking fines to wear fits. That’s always something that stood out to me. He always made sure he did it his way, and he went out swinging.

SLAM: You mentioned there’s still a lot more to accomplish. What does that list of goals look like?

SGA: My biggest thing is, I just want to win a championship. That’s why you play the game. When I was in 9th grade and tried out for the team, I wanted to win a city championship. I always just want to win—on the biggest and highest stage of basketball in the world. That’s my main and only focus. All I really care about. If I get that one day, I’ll be all right.

SLAM: You were cut from your JV team in ninth grade; how much did that impact the way you went about pursuing basketball?

SGA: I used it as motivation. I never sulked or was down bad about it or was in my feelings about it. I just took it as, I wasn’t good enough. I thought I was good enough; clearly I wasn’t. I wanted to make sure that I never had that feeling again. And I think I did a pretty good job at that.
