Congolese troops along with allied foreign troops continue to fight Rwanda-backed M23 rebels who are advancing beyond Goma- the largest city captured in the mineral-rich east. Over 700 people have been killed in less than a week of fighting in DR Congo as per the United Nations. The Rwanda-backed armed group M23 has vowed to march on the capital Kinshasa after capturing Goma. DRC authorities have declared the city of Beni as the capital of North Kivu province after the fall of Goma. Meanwhile, M23 fighters have been moving south towards the city of Kavumu in neighbouring South Kivu. The city has a strategic military airfield and is where the Congolese army has laid down its defensive line which is just 40 kilometres north of South Kivu’s capital Bukavu. However, there are reports the advances in the south have been slowed. Though the DR Congo army is significantly weak in front of m23 and Rwandan forces they have been supported by troops of other nations in Africa. Watch for more.
