La Liga finish, top goalscorer and season preview

Barcelona will look to dethrone Real Madrid and secure what would be the club’s 28th La Liga title in the 2024/25 season.

Barcelona are coming off a lackluster 2023/24 season that ended with zero trophies and the removal of head coach, Xavi Hernandez. Despite still finishing second in La Liga, the club’s domestic campaign was deemed a failure, one that matched their lack of success in Europe.

Now, with former Bayern Munich boss Hansi Flick at the helm, new signing Dani Olmo in the midfield, and plenty of young talent on the pitch and the bench, Barcelona have their sights set on besting rivals, Real Madrid, for the Spanish crown.

Here’s 90min’s season preview of Barcelona’s 2024/25 campaign.

Barcelona’s performances in the last five seasons have had high highs and low lows. Under Xavi, they won La Liga in the 2022/23 season, as well as the Spanish Super Cup. They didn’t win a trophy last year, though, for the third time in five seasons.

The iconic club also has massively struggled in the Champions League. They failed to make the semi-finals in the last five seasons, and had two shocking group stage exits.

Most of Barcelona’s best players will retain the same shirt numbers from the previous season, but their young superstars were forced to change their numbers now that they are registered with the first-team squad.

Lamine Yamal traded his 27 shirt for 19, while Pau Cubarsi switched from 33 to 2, which was most recently worn by Joao Cancelo. Eric Garcia will don the number 24.

New signing, Dani Olmo, opted for the 20 jersey in the wake of Sergi Roberto’s departure. Pau Victor, the former Girona man, took 18.

Pablo Torre, meanwhile, will now wear Joao Felix’s 14, and Marc Casado has Marcos Alonso’s 17 shirt.

Barcelona’s 2024/25 home kit pays homage to the club’s first ever kit from 1899. The design replaced the blue and maroon stripes of last year with solid blue and maroon split down the front and back of the jersey. The crest rests in the middle of the two colors, just above a gold Spotify logo.

The leaked away kit is predominately black with a maroon stripe on the right side and a blue stripe on the left. Unlike the home kit, the jersey contains a collar.

Robert Lewandowski should surely once again be Barcelona’s top goalscorer. The No. 9 finished third in the Pichichi race last season with 19 La Liga goals. The year prior, though, the Poland international took home the prestigious award after scoring 23 goals in 34 La Liga appearances.

Lewandowski will once again be the go-to target up top, and he will have more to do this year without Joao Felix to help share the goalscoring load. The now Atletico Madrid man scored 10 goals for Barcelona across all competitions last year, the second most on the team.

Ferran Torres, Fermin Lopez, and Lamine Yamal will be relied on to produce in the final third, especially after their successful international campaigns this summer.

Barcelona’s young talent put on a show this summer, helping Spain win both Euro 2024 and the gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The Catalans’ emerging stars combined with established players like Robert Lewandowski and Ilkay Gundogan make for a dangerous roster heading into the 2024/25 La Liga season.

Despite Atletico Madrid’s recent signings of Julian Alvarez, Robin Le Normand, and Alexander Sorloth, Barcelona’s squad still has the consistency, talent, and experience to beat out Diego Simeone’s side in the La Liga standings.

There are still question marks surrounding this Barcelona side, though, including multiple injuries to key players like Gavi, Ronald Araujo, and Frenkie de Jong, as well as how they will perform under Hansi Flick. They seem poised for another 2nd place La Liga finish behind Real Madrid.
