Inter Miami vs Toronto FC: Preview, predictions and lineups

Inter Miami return home to Chase Stadium to take on Toronto FC Wednesday night in Major League Soccer action.

The Herons were last in action on July 6 as they fell to reigning Supporters’ Shield champions FC Cincinnati 6-1 at TQL Stadium. The win from Pat Noonan’s side saw Cincinnati leapfrog Miami in the Supporters’ Shield standings, and the Herons will look to regroup and get back in the win column this week against Toronto.

Toronto, on the other hand, remain in the playoff conversation in the Eastern Conference despite going through a rough patch over the last month. John Herdman’s team has managed just one league win from their last 10 tries that has them sitting in eighth place in the division. However, Toronto collected three points last time out on Saturday, winning 2-1 over Philadelphia Union.

Here’s 90min‘s guide to the Herons vs the Reds.

Miami’s midfield general Sergio Busquets will miss the match after being shown a second yellow card against Cincinnati, while full-back Marcelo Weigandt is also unavailable for selection due to yellow card accumulation.

Even though Lionel Messi should be reporting back to the Herons’ training ground soon, he won’t be suiting up in the near future after suffering a painful ankle injury in the Copa America final. It’s safe to say that Miami’s No. 10 will be out of action for several weeks and into Leagues Cup 2024.

The iconic Luis Suarez is also set to return to south Florida after Uruguay’s third place finish at Copa America, but the former Gremio forward will likely miss Wednesday night’s match.

Center-back Tomas Aviles’ status is up in the air after the defender missed the last few matches with a knee problem.

Inter Miami predicted lineup vs Columbus Crew ( 4-3-3 ): Callender; Fray, Kryvtsov, Sailor, Alba, Cremaschi, Bright, Redondo; Gressel, Campana, Taylor.

Jonathan Osorio returns to Toronto

Toronto boss Herdman will be delighted that club captain Jonathan Osorio is returning from international duty following Canada’s impressive fourth place at finish Copa America. It’s unlikely that Osorio will feature in the starting XI, but the veteran midfielder could make an appearance off the bench.

Tyrese Spicer is dealing with a back injury and is a doubt for the match, and the young forward should return to action later this month.

Toronto FC predicted lineup vs Inter Miami ( 3-4-2-1 ): Johnson; O’Neill, Long, Rosted; Bernardeschi, Flores, Longstaff, Petretta; Marshall-Rutty, Insigne; Owusu.

As Miami are missing a handful of players due to international duty and suspenion, this one could be a tight affair with the points being shared. Toronto will look to build on their win against Philadelphia while Miami could struggle mentally after their heavy defeat against Cincinnati, meaning each side will take a point from the match Wednesday night.

Prediction: Inter Miami 1-1 Toronto FC
