3 signings Barcelona need to make this summer

Barcelona are set to kickstart yet another new era in 2024/25, with former Bayern Munich and Germany boss Hansi Flick taking over as head coach.

And while Flick has yet to oversee any signings so far this summer, there’s plenty of rumours floating around linking the club with major acquisitions.

Here’s the three acquisitions that we at 90min think Barca desperately need during the current transfer window.

To say the very, very least, Nico Williams has been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona.

And, considering how unbelievably brilliant he was at Euro 2024, it’s easy to see why Barca are so keen to secure his services – especially when arch rivals Real Madrid have bulked up their UEFA Champions League-winning attack with the signing of Kylian Mbappe.

Reports suggest that the wide forward’s preferred destination is Barca, and his €58m release clause represents rather incredible value in today’s market.

If they can find a way to afford Williams given ongoing financial limitations, Deco and co need to get this deal over the line. If they don’t, don’t expect Barca to come within a million miles of challenging Real Madrid for La Liga’s title this coming season.

Another one of Spain’s Euro 2024 stars, and another player who has been consistently linked with a move to Catalonia in recent weeks.

Recent reports state that Barcelona have seen their opening bid for Dani Olmo be rejected by RB Leipzig, with the Bundesliga club said to be holding out for a fee closer to €60m for his services.

A move for Olmo certainly makes sense for Hansi Flick’s team, as the former La Masia player can operate basically anywhere across the forward line and in attacking midfield positions. It’s in the latter where he’d be most useful to a Barca team who are currently relying on veteran Ilkay Gundogan and the injury prone Pedri for creativity in that area of the pitch.

But 90min understands Barcelona are currently prioritising a move for Williams, which means they could miss out on Olmo.

Is there any chance of this deal happening?

Honestly, probably not.

If Barcelona could hand pick one player to finally fill the void left by Sergio Busquets deep in their midfield, they’d undoutedly pick Martin Zubimendi.

The Real Sociedad star is an archetypal Barca midfielder in many ways, and would go a long way to alleviating the club’s notable midfield woes since Busquets left in 2023.
