Jurgen Klopp’s recent announcement shocked football fans across the world.
The Liverpool manager will step aside come the end of the season, bringing his incredible Anfield career to an end. The 56-year-old, who was appointed back in October 2015, has transformed the Reds and there won’t be a dry eye in the house when he walks out for his final home game of the season against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
While Liverpool have plenty of time to give him the perfect send-off – the Reds still participating in four different competitions this term – he has already managed some pretty sensational records on Merseyside.
While numbers don’t quite do his impact justice, here are the craziest statistics from Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool reign.
Klopp swiftly changed the atmosphere around Anfield upon his arrival by employing his high-energy, relentless football philosophy. However, while Liverpool fans were willing to be patient with the 56-year-old, he was quick to win over the crowd with results.
His methods quickly paid dividends and the former Borussia Dortmund manager has continued that success to this day.
Klopp currently boasts the highest win percentage of any Liverpool manager that has taken charge of over 50 matches, significantly surpassing the totals of club legends Bill Shankly, Bob Paisley and Kenny Dalglish.
The German has won 62.18% of his 468 matches at the helm, with the next closest being Dalglish with 58.53%.
There is an obvious correlation between Klopp’s impressive win percentage and his trophy cabinet. The former Mainz coach has amassed seven trophies during his eight-and-a-half years in England, with potentially more to come by the time of his departure.
Klopp has never won any trophy more than once during his Liverpool career, but has lifted the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup and Community Shield for the Reds.
As a result, he’s the only Liverpool manager to have ever won six different trophies – having actually triumphed in seven different competitions – and could add another new piece of silverware to his name should he win the Europa League this term.
Liverpool have always had an affinity for memorable comebacks, with Klopp only continuing the club’s traditions during his time in the dugout. Even in their best seasons, the Reds have never been infallible, often falling behind in matches.
However, going a goal or two down has never fazed Klopp or his players. In fact, since his first match in charge in October 2015, Liverpool have won 148 points from losing positions, more than any other side across Europe’s big five leagues.
That comeback record is still well intact this season, the Reds having managed a division-high 19 points from losing positions in the Premier League in 2023/24.
Losses have been infrequent for Klopp since his arrival on Merseyside. Even during the 2018/19 season when his side finished runners-up to Manchester City with 97 points in the Premier League, the Reds were only defeated once.
Liverpool enjoyed their most successful period under Klopp during their 2019/20 title-winning season, with the Reds managing a staggering 44-game unbeaten run in the Premier League that stretched back to that one defeat to Man City the campaign prior.
The streak took place from 12 January 2019 to 24 February 2020, with Klopp’s side just five games off matching the all-time Premier League record set by Arsenal in the early 2000s.
The Reds eventually lost to Watford 3-0 at Vicarage Road – their first defeat of the season until that point – and amassed a remarkable 132 points from a possible 142 on that run, with a 2.77 points-per-game average.
During the 44-match streak, Klopp’s Liverpool matched a Premier League record that had been set by Man City in 2017 under Pep Guardiola. Between 27 October 2019 and 24 February, the Reds won 18 games in a row in the top flight, with Watford also bringing that run to an end during the 3-0 win at Vicarage Road.
That streak included a 3-1 victory over Man City, as well as wins against rivals Manchester United and Everton.
During the 2019/20 season in which this 18-game winning run was set, Liverpool won 26 of their opening 27 league matches, only dropping points during a 1-1 draw with Man Utd at Old Trafford.
One of Klopp’s most impressive achievements at Liverpool has been delivering success on a budget – relative to the other big clubs around him. Of course, the Reds have splashed large sums on the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Alisson and Darwin Nunez, but their net spend in comparison to the rest of the Premier League’s biggest sides is notably low.
Since Klopp’s arrival, Liverpool have a net spend of just £254m having splashed a total of £807m on players. In comparison, Man City and Arsenal boast a net spend of almost three times as much (£692.3m and £696.2m respectively), while Man Utd (£888m) and Chelsea (£835.7m) have far higher net spends during the same period.
Even Tottenham – who haven’t lifted a single piece of silverware during Klopp’s reign – have a net spend of £484m, highlighting just how shrewd the former Dortmund coach and his recruitment team have been in the transfer market.
