Inter Miami held Charlotte FC to a 2-2 draw at DRV PNK Stadium in the team’s final home match of the 2023 Major League Soccer campaign, as goals from Nicolás Marcelo Stefanelli and Robbie Robertson canceled out the efforts of the opponent.
Head coach Gerardo Martino made several changes against Charlotte , reintroducing previously injured Gregore to the starting 11
The Herons entered the match with no chance of qualifying to the playoffs, playing simply for extra points and experience. Head coach Gerardo Martino revealed he would make changes to the line up in hopes to improve the team, introducing players that saw limited time on the pitch while the Herons fought for the US Open Cup, Leagues Cup and a playoff slot.
But Miami struggled without the staples.
Charlotte constantly tested the Herons’ defense, quickly identifying DeAndre Yedlin’s weakness on the left before capitalizing on the opportunity in the 45th minute. Kerwin Vargas beat the defender to cross the ball into the 18-yard box for Enzo Copetti to head past goalkeeper Drake Callender.
Miami limited celebrations with a goal of their own, equalizing the score after Nicolás Marcelo Stefanelli rocketed a rebound into the opposite corner of the net. Each side found the back of the net once more, as Robbie Robertson’s late goal nullified the previous efforts of Vargas.
The Herons will now focus on the final game of the 2023 campaign on Saturday against Charlotte once again.
GK: Drake Callender – 7/10 – Inconsistent. Made a couple good saves while reacting slow with the goals.
RB: DeAndre Yedlin – 5/10 – Once again proved to be Miami’s defensive weakness. Teams constantly capitalize on the right side because of Yedlin.
CB: Tomas Aviles – 7/10 – Off when defending. Late to make most necessary tackles, and beat too many times.
CB: Kamal Miller -6 /10 – Disappointing when defending. Beat to the ball on the goals, and overall a lack of leadership at the back.
LB: Noah Allen – 6/10 – Missed a 1v1 with the goalkeeper that could’ve equalized the match, but otherwise silent.
CM: Diego Gomez – 6.5/10 – Failed to establish a presence throughout the game. A few moments of possession here and there, but nothing of note.
CM: Sergio Busquets – 6/10 – Once again looked fatigued, late to defend the second goal.
CM: Gregore – 7/10 – Decent after returning from an extended injury. Not much expected from the player.
RW: Nicolás Marcelo Stefanelli – 9/10 – Struggled in the opening minutes before scoring the equalizer in the first half. Better as the game progressed.
ST: Leonardo Campana – 7/10 – Not effective at the front, but somewhat understandable after coming back from injury. Needs time to readjust.
LW: Facundo Farias – 7/10 – Dormant for the majority of the match. Lacked the creativity we’re used to seeing from the player.
Substitutes
LB: Jordi Alba (59′ for Allen) – 7/10 – Readjusting after injury, did fine.
CM: Jean Mota (’59 for Gregore) – 7/10 – Yet another player returning to the pitch after a long spell on the sidelines, did progressively better.
RW: Robbie Robinson (’76 for Stefanelli) -10/10 – Came off the bench to score the equalizer, before showing constant energy when pushing forward.
CM: David Ruiz (’90 for Gomez) – N/A
Manager
Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino – 7/10 – Made the necessary changes to give players minutes ahead of the final game of the season.
