1898: Riots in Shanghai Are Now Subsiding


Hong Kong, Monday. — The riots at the French settlement at Shanghai are subsiding. Twenty-two Chinese have been killed and fifty wounded. The French sailors are maintaining a guard.

It is believed that the French intend to extend the boundaries of the settlement to Sica-Wei. The Chinese are incensed against the Taotai. Business is suspended.
